The political cycle of road traffic accidents

چکیده

Road traffic accidents mean lost productivity and medical expenditures. We explain trends in as a function of the political cycle using municipal data from Italy. show that during election years, accident rate increases by 1.5%, with 2% increase injury but no effect on fatality rate. The effects are stronger quarter prior to quarter, when electoral campaign is at its zenith, second after for new elected mayor. this result decrease tickets violations (rate revenues) years. Our results robustly driven defined different ways, their magnitude direction not explained spillover between municipalities. Proximity national police station reduces impact local elections rates.
